Question:

As stated in this week IVLV Newsletter, Jerry Tarkanian, the coach who took UNLV to the 1990 national championship and four Final Fours, finally got voted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame after waiting 20 years. Tarkanian spent 19 years as head basketball coach for UNLV and won 509 games with a winning percentage of .829. Do you think he should have been inducted many years’ prior, is it correct to have him wait 20 years or should he not be voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame?  What is your opinion? We want to hear from you! (See other readers’ opinions below.)

Reader Poll Replies:

I think he should have been inducted many years ago, he was one of the greats in college basketball.   Jeff C   Las Vegas

He was his own show when he coached and whether he ate his towel or not, he was an excellent coach and should have been recognized long before now.  Gloria  San Francisco, CA

.829 winning percentage is terrific but what was his graduation percentage for these student athletes? I guess 20 years is long enough to forget another important statistic.   Mike Cyganiak  New Berlin, Wi

he was a great coach and i enjoyed watching his teams.  Glad the finally voted him into hall of fame.  Michael Jeffries

About time.  Coach Tark worked hard and is finally recognized.  Susan J. New Orleans

He was very colorful and had an awesome record, he deserves the fame and should have been inducted many years prior.  Roger Miller  Miami FL

Like everything in life it is all about politics. Anyone with a .829 win percentage should be inducted. Does anyone know anyone else with this kind of record who is not in the hall of fame? He must have pissed somebody off. Howard  Indianapolis, IN  usa

Seems like a reasonable time for him to wait.  Betty Johnson Utah
