History enthusiasts can enjoy
several ghost towns dating back more than a century surround Las Vegas.
The Nevada Territory was a haven for prospectors looking for various
minerals. Several prospectors became millionaires,
unfortunately thousands of miners were among the people who did not
strike it rich. Listed below are some of the more famous ghost
towns of southern Nevada, click on each one for a brief description.

Searchlight, Nevada
Goodsprings,
a mining camp for lead and zinc about 35-miles southwest of
Las Vegas. Visitors will see the remains of mine workings and an
abandoned railroad grade. Goodsprings was a mining settlement in
the hills located only seven miles west of Jean, Nevada. Goodsprings
served as an important town for milling ore from all the surrounding
mines. The refined ore would be transported by wagon to Jean, Nevada
where awaiting train cars would be loaded. Jean, Nevada is a small
community found on the I-15 highway that runs from Las Vegas to Los
Angeles.
Sandy Valley
, just 13-miles west of Good Springs, is home to an old gold
mill and a ghost town called Sandy.
Nevada is home to dozens of ghost towns
that all have a colorful history and worth visiting. The Wild West
history lives on and these historical ghost towns are a pleasant drive to
yesteryear. Their colorful names will turn your imagination loose -- names
like Bullfrog, Goldpoint, Aurora, Rhyolite, Jumpertown, Amargosa, Tonopah
and hundreds more. |
